Defending Class Champions Win Sprint Car Mains at Skagit Speedway

Skagit Speedway News by Media & Fans
Alger, WA - It was a good night to be a defending champion in the sprint car divisions at Skagit Speedway. In the Budweiser 360 class, Brian Kirkpatrick took his K&B Racing #7k XXX to victory lane after inheriting the lead on lap six. Travis Rutz led the first five laps, but slowed to a stop on the sixth circuit with an ignition box problem. This handed the lead to Kirkpatrick, the defending 360 champion, who led every lap that follow en route to his second victory of '09. Second went to Brock Lemley in the Haling Seafood #40 XXX, third to Alan Munn in the Munn Construction #42 XXX. Kirkpatrick also set quick time. Rutz got his ignition fixed and worked his way all the way back to fourth in his Rutz Racing #8 XXX. Heat race wins went to Rod Perkins in the Classic Rock 92.9 #69 XXX and Lemley.

Kelsey Carpenter, defending division champion and current points leader, has been arguably the most dominant driver at Skagit Speedway in 2009, and he went a long way to accentuating that point by winning his fifth main event of the season in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints, leading to the pack to the final flags by 4.9 seconds in his Dri-Eaz #27c XXX. Bill Rude was second in his North Cascade Ford #33 Eagle. Third was Lyle Woods in his K&B Racing #12 Becker. In a rare qualifying session for the Sportsman Sprints, Carpenter lowered his own track record in the class by almost a half second. Heat race wins went to Michael Bollinger in the Sunworks Tanning #73 Maxim and Woods.

The Outlaw Hornet main was a thrilling affair, featuring four different leaders. On a lap 14 restart, Freddy Vela took the lead from Ben Gunderson and raced away with Wade Swatzina in tow. On lap 18, Vela left just enough room on the top side of turn one for Swatzina to get a clean run, and Swatzina did just that, powering around Vela for the lead and the win two laps later. Vela finished second with Rick Young bringing home third. Heat race wins went to Gunderson and James Bundy.

Skagit Speedway fans were treated to a 4 cylinder demo derby after the main events with Nick Williams being crowned the eventual winners in his Volvo DL. Once the demo cars were cleared, Mr Dizzy performed his jump of doom, clearing two motorhomes and six compact cars in his Buick muscle car towing a fiberglass boat successfully.

Skagit Speedway is taking the July 4th weekend off, and returning with Mid Season Championship night and the Les Schwab Fireworks Extravaganza on July 11th. Track promoter Steve Beitler is promising the most spectacular fireworks display in track history, so you'll want to get to the track early to get your seat saved. Ticket information is available online at www.skagitspeedway.com

Stewart Dominates 410 Main, Looking Forward to Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway

Skagit Speedway News by Media & Fans
Stewart Dominates 410 Main, Looking Forward to Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway

Skagit Speedway Media - 5/16/09

Alger, WA - After weeks and weeks of rain outs in the Midwest, Shane Stewart showed no signs of rust at Skagit Speedway on round five of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series. After timing in second quick on the night and winning his heat race, Stewart shot his Jet City Equipment #7k A.R.T. to the lead on the very first lap of the 25 lap feature and won with ease, enjoying a full straightaway lead all race long. "I have to thank Danny and Becky (Kirkpatrick). We want to come out and win Dirt Cup for them, that's my focus right now" said Shane in victory lane. Second was Jesse Whitney in the Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Third went to Jason Solwold in the Shark Racing Engines #73 Maxim. Solwold also won the first heat race. Whitney was quick time.

Brock Lemley visited victory lane for the first time at Skagit Speedway in the Budweiser 360 series. With race leader Brian Kirkpatrick mired in heavy lapped traffic, Lemley took his Haling Seafood #40 XXX to the bottom of corner two and slipped underneath Kirkpatrick to take the. Kirkpatrick fought back but was unable to sneak back by and had to settle for second in the Jet City Equipment #5k XXX. He also set quick time. Jason Solwold came from 11th to finish third in the Jon Farrell owned #51 Maxim. Danny Kirkpatrick won the first heat in his Jet City Equipment #7k Maxim. Lemley won the second heat.

What was looking like an epic Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprint main turned out to be a landslide in favor of Kelsey Carpenter. Marc Schutte jetted out to the lead on the initial green with Carpenter in tow. For the first nine laps, Schutte ran low and Carpenter pushed the cushion, thrilling the fans with a see-saw battle. Then on lap 10, disaster struck; going into turn one, Schutte had a pittman arm break, sending the car careening hard into the turn two wall and flipping him over causing a red. Carpenter would inherit the lead in his Dri-Eaz #27c XXX and cruise to victory from there, crossing under the final flags 8.7 seconds ahead of Bill Rude's North Cascade Ford #33 Eagle and Lyle Woods' Jet City Equipment #12k Becker. Glen Reinstra won the first heat in his #13gr XXX. Schutte won the second heat.

Ken Higby scored the victory in the Outlaw Hornet class. Battling deep in lap traffic, Higby powered under race leader Brian Michelson on lap 11 to pick up the lead and eventual win, holding off a charging Freddie Vela and Greg Hibma in the process. Heat race wins went to Howard Vos and Cory Swatzina.

Round Six of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series kicks off next week at Skagit Speedway with the John Carroll Classic presented by Industrial Resources Incorporated. gates open at 530p with racing beginning at 7p. For ticket information, go to www.skagitspeedway.com

Whitney Wins Round 2 of Foothills Toyota Tundra Series

Skagit Speedway News by Media & Fans
Alger, WA - Jesse Whitney ended a 5 year drought at Skagit Speedway Saturday night, winning his first Associated Asphalt 410 main event since his championship season of 2004. Whitney, driving his Precise Machining #88 Eagle, set quick time on the night and settled into second place trying to run down race leader Travis Rutz. As Rutz approached traffic in the Rudeen Racing #26 Maxim, Whitney methodically rolled the bottom of the track, gaining car lengths lap by lap. By lap 17, Whitney had clsoed in enough to show a tire to Rutz who continued to push the cushion. Whitney made his move on lap 21, driving underneath Rutz of the bottom of turn two and powering down the back stretch to take the lead and eventual race win. "I've got to thank my crew" said Whitney in victory lane. "We're out here with old equipment, and they just work so hard and we're finally getting it done!" Second was Rick Fauver in the Here 2 Wire #F1 Maxim. Third went to Cory Chamberlain in the Bob and Lori Scott owned #7s Maxim. Whitney set quick time. Heat wins went to Colton Heath in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX and Fauver.

Race fans were treated to an amazing finish in the Budweiser 360 Sprints. Shane Broers inherited the lead in his Firedown Graphics #11 XXX on lap 6 when race leader Danielle Huson tangled with lapped traffic, ending her night. Broers manned the point with Mack Brown in the Birch Equipment Rentals #96 XXX in tail. As laps ran down, Broers came in to heavier lapped traffic, letting Brown close the gap between himself and the leader. As the white flag flew, Broers missed the entry to turn one, opening the door for Brown to drive underneath him coming out of two, edging into the lead. Broers battled back, turning the car down hard off the high banks and two and running along side Brown down the back stretch when contact occured, damaging both cars. Broers and Brown remained side by side through 3 when Brown's right rear tire let go due to damage, giving Broers his first career damage. Brown careened along the fenceline, hanging on for a career best second place finish. Third went to Rod Perkins in the 92.9 Classic Rock #69 XXX. Broers and Perkins were the heat race winners.
