Skagit Speedway News by Media & FansMartinez, Kirkpatrick, Carpenter and Gunderson win Skagit Speedway Championships

Skagit Speedway Media ~ Kaleb Hart

9/13/2008

Alger, WA - The Coach Corral Season Championships at Skagit Speedway capped off an exciting 2008. Barry Martinez won his second career championship in the Yourgreengoods.com Outlaw 410 Sprints. Colton Heath jumped to the lead on the outset of the 25 lap feature, racing to a solid advantage as the laps clipped by quickly. All looked to be well in hand for Heath until something went sour in the Oudman Motorsports #7o, ending his evening and his run at the points leader Martinez. Travis Rutz inherited the lead in his Rudeen Racing #26 after getting by Martinez on lap 13, and went on to take the checkered flags first to cap off a successful 2008 campaign. Martinez brought home his Artisan Homes #66 second to secure his second career title, capping off an extraordinary points battle between himself and Heath. Eric Fisher ended his rookie campaign by finishing the main third is the JnR Paving #59. Heath won the scramble.

Brian Kirkpatrick ended 2008 with a bang, leading all 25 laps of the Budweiser 360 Sprints main en route to securing his first career season championship aboard his Jet City Rentals #5k. Cory Chamberlain ran second in the Classic Rock 92.9 Fm #69. Third was Alan Munn in the Munn Construction #42. Munn also won the scramble.

Kelsey Carpenter won his first career Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprint championship and the main event, edging Marc Schutte off the 4th corner and beating him to the line by one one-hundreth of a second in the Action Cleaning #79k. Schutte led the entire way until the final stripe aboard his Fastenal sponsored #72. Bill Rude capped his rookie season in the Sportsman by finishing third in his Zip Tune #33. Schutte won the dash.

Ben Gunderson had the Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornet championship locked up heading into the final points race of 2008, but that didn't prevent the 2nd year driver from racing hard on Saturday night. Cory Swatzina took the lead on lap 6 from Ken Higby then navigated lapped traffic brilliantly with Greg Hibma and Gunderson right on his tail all the way to the final flag on lap 17. Gunderson won the scramble.

Sep 16, 08 September 16, 2008 - Fred Brownfield Memorial this weekend for ASCS N

(ASCS) Northwest Region Sprint NewsSeptember 16, 2008 - September 16, 2008 - Fred Brownfield Memorial this weekend for ASCS Northwest Region

By ASCS Northwest Region Media

The ASCS Northwest Region kicked off its 2008 season in May at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.
The Elma track, once an aging facility, was transformed into one of the country’s Sprint car showplaces four years ago by Fred Brownfield.
This weekend the American Sprint Car Series Northwest Region, a series utilizing rules Brownfield was working towards for Sprint cars in the Northwest, pays tribute to the man with the Fred Brownfield Memorial.
The second annual Fred Brownfield Memorial takes place Friday and Saturday. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. both days, with racing around 6:30. Tickets are $20 each night for adults, $5 for children (ages 6-14) and free for children 5 and under. Two-day adult tickets are $39.
In honor of Brownfield, a former racer who drove a No. 92 sprinter, Saturday’s winner will take home $10,092. The event pays $492 to start Saturday’s A-Main.
Last year’s first annual event was scheduled to take place during July’s Northwest Speedweek, but rain pushed things back to September.
The unfortunate weather turned out to be a blessing in some ways, as drivers around the country who were locked in track points battles in July were looking for somewhere to race in mid-September.
Such is the case again this year, as some of the Northwest’s top Sprint car drivers like ASCS Northwest Region points leader Jared Ridge, 2008 Dirt Cup champion Jayme Barnes, 2008 Northwest Speedweek champion Roger Crockett and seven-time GHR Sprint car track champion Jay Cole take on some of the top drivers from around the country.
That list includes 2008 360 Knoxville Nationals champion Wayne Johnson and Knoxville regulars Natalie Sather and Joe Beaver – the latter of whom just happens to be married to Brownfield’s niece.
Also expected to be on hand is Shane Stewart, who dominated Sprint car racing in the Northwest last summer while driving the Doyle’s Harley-Davidson car that he’ll be piloting this weekend.
Stewart is the defending Fred Brownfield Memorial champion, having swept last year’s event in Elma.
This is the penultimate weekend of racing for the ASCS Northwest Region. The 2008 season concludes with a Sept. 26-27 at the Yakima Dirt Track in Yakima, Wash.
Heading into Elma, Ridge leads the standings with 1,078 points. Brock Lemley and Barnes are tied for second with 1,046 points while Crockett is fourth with 1,022. Cole rounds out the top five with 990 points.

N C MACHINERY CATERPILLAR CLASH WORLD OF OUTLAWS AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

Skagit Speedway News by Media & Fans
N C MACHINERY CATERPILLAR CLASH WORLD OF OUTLAWS AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

(Alger, WA) 8/27/08  by Kelly Hart

Preparations continue at Skagit Speedway for the Advanced Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Gold Rush Tour events this weekend. The N C Machinery Caterpillar Clash event for the WoO Sprint cars comes towards what is the end of the racing season in the Pacific Northwest. Skagit Speedway has one more scheduled Sprint Car race on the 2008 Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series and that is Championship Night September 13th.

The last two main event winners on the WoO trail are Jac Haudenschild and Jason Meyers, two drivers that have some history at Skagit Speedway. Haudenschild has raced at the high-banked quarter mile clay oval not only with the Outlaws but also as a “hired gun” for some of the past Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup events. The “Wild Child” is completing his first year driving the R19 car and his season includes the win last weekend at Castrol Speedway in Edmonton, Alberta, 2 fast times on the season and he sits 6th in overall points.

Meyers; who began his career racing with the Sprint Cars in California has also competed in past Dirt Cups. Neither has a big race win at Skagit Speedway to their credit. Meyers sits second in WoO point standings, with 8 wins and a series leading 8 fast times to his credit.

Some local drivers with aspirations to defeat the Outlaws on their home track include Jason Solwold who race full time with the WoO the last few years and this years Dirt Cup Champion Jayme Barnes. Travis Rutz driving for the Rudeen Racing team figures to contend. And former Dirt Cup and 360 Nationals champion Shane Stewart is driving for the Dennis Roth – Beef Packers #83 car which has plenty of big race wins at Skagit Speedway under their belt.

With teams and drivers settling into the Skagit Speedway area, track crews are hard at work preparing the 8100 seat facility for the biggest crowds, and the biggest race of the season. Skagit Speedway is ready for “The Greatest Show on Dirt” and putting their best foot forward for the weekend.

Ticket prices and information on the N C Machinery Caterpillar Clash World of Outlaws event at Skagit Speedway are available online at www.SkagitSpeedway.com or by calling 360.724-3567.

POINTS AND OUTLAWS TOP SKAGIT SPEEDWAY SCHEDULE

Skagit Speedway News by Media & Fans
POINTS AND OUTLAWS TOP SKAGIT SPEEDWAY SCHEDULE

(Alger, WA)   8/20/08  by Kelly Hart

There are two nights of point racing left in the 2008 Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series at Skagit Speedway. This weekend at Banner Bank Night all 3 Sprint Car classes and the Outlaw Hornets are scheduled to race.

For the yourgreengoods.com Outlaw 410 Sprint Cars it is the weekend before the World of Outlaw annual invasion. But first up is point racing. Last weekend the point leader Barry Martinez had his night end early, and coupled with a third place run for Colton Heath left the 410 standings just one point apart. Martinez leads at 1181 to 1180. The owner points are also just one apart with Martinez leading Roger Oudman. The remainder of the drivers top five in points is Nick Engberg, Travis Rutz and Josh DeWitt.

Next week when the Advanced Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series invades Skagit Speedway for the annual race presented by N C Machinery and Caterpillar, they are expected to contend with a strong Northwest contingent of Outlaw 410 Sprints, 21 cars raced in the division last week. And they are ready for the 19 traveling teams of the World of Outlaws and any team that is serious about wanting a $25,000 winner’s paycheck.

Brian Kirkpatrick sits atop the Budweiser 360 Sprints with his second win under his belt last Saturday night. Kirkpatrick leads Alan Munn, his father Danny Kirkpatrick sits in third place, Rookie-of-the-Year point leader “Mad” Mack Brown is fourth and wily veteran Michael Harris having his best year ever sitting fifth.

After a fierce midseason push Devin Madonia has lost his grip on the lead in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. Early season point leader Kelsey Carpenter has one again climbed to the top and now leads the second year driver by seventeen points. Marcus Schutte has quietly slipped into third place, with rookies Kyle Oman and Bill Rude rounding out the top five.

In the Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornet division, Ben Gunderson is following up his solid rookie season with a strong sophomore campaign. Gunderson has opened up a 20 point lead on Rick Young and a 25 point lead on Ken “Splat” Higby in the standings. The Outlaw Hornets are looking forward to the 4th Annual US Hornet Nationals and 1st Annual Wilson Auto Brokers Hornet Enduro on the final weekend of the race year at Skagit Speedway September 20th and 21st.

Advanced reserved seat ticket sales continue through Saturday for the upcoming World of Outlaw race August 29th and 30th at Skagit Speedway. You can call the ticket office during the week at 360.724.3567 or visit the ticket booth at the track on Saturday night. Check out all the news at www.SkagitSpeedway.com

NO RAIN THIS WEEKEND AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY!

Skagit Speedway News by Media & Fans
NO RAIN THIS WEEKEND AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY!

(Alger, WA) 8/7/08  by Kelly Hart

Sometimes you are the bug and sometimes you are the windshield. Mother Nature claimed another racing weekend last Saturday night at Skagit Speedway, but this week it’s sunshine and blue skies waiting for teams and fans.

On the race track this Saturday night and chasing points in the 2008 Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series Saturday night will be the Outlaw 410 Sprints presented by yourgreengoods.com, along with the Budweiser 360 Sprints, Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornets and a first ever racing visit from the Ford Focus Midgets. The Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints have the week off, leaving just 3 points races on their season.

The feature division Outlaw 410 Sprints presented by yourgreengoods.com are gearing up for the annual visit from the World of Outlaws on August 29th and 30th and this is the first of 3 remaining point races for them. Barry Martinez is followed by Colton Heath, 360 Nationals winner Travis Rutz, Nick Engberg, and Steve Kilcup in the driver point standings.

The point battle is heating up in the Budweiser 360 Sprints division with Brian Kirkpatrick leading Alan Munn, Danny Kirkpatrick, “Mad” Mack Brown the leading Rookie-of-the-Year contender and Jason Cocking in the point standings.

The always unpredictable Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornet class has a tie atop the leader board after 13 weeks of racing. Rick Young has been joined by Ben Gunderson in the top spot with Ken Higby, defending Hornet Nationals Champion Cory Swatzina and Fast Freddy Vela still in contention. Fifty-one Outlaw Hornets have earned championship points this season.

Race fans in the Northwest are just two weeks away from the World of Outlaws 3rd annual race weekend at Skagit Speedway in Alger, WA. The event is sponsored locally by N C Machinery / Caterpillar for the second straight year. At the end of the month the Advanced Auto Parts World of Outlaws roll into town as part of their late year, West Coast tour. The Greatest Show on Dirt is bringing the best of the best Outlaw 410 Sprint car drivers in the country along with. Current point leader and two-time defending champion Donny Schatz is looking to break his Skagit Speedway jinx and find the winning $25,000.00 check for Tony Stewart Racing. Second in WoO season points is California native Jason Meyers, last year’s winner Craig Dollansky, and Kasey Kahne Racing driver Joey Saldana will also be along. Also slated to appear is former Skagit Speedway track champion Chad Hillier, now running his second full season with the Outlaws. This is the 30th Anniversary for the World of Outlaws organization.

Reserved seating is available in advance by calling the Skagit Speedway ticket office at 360.724.3567. You can find out more about the rest of the schedule, photos, news and other information online at www.SkagitSpeedway.com .

ENGBERG WINS NIGHT ONE OF 360 NATIONALS

Skagit Speedway News by Media & Fans
ENGBERG WINS NIGHT ONE OF 360 NATIONALS

(Alger, WA) 8/1/08  by Kelly Hart

When the night was done, the final main event of the evening saw Burlington, WA driver Nick Engberg in winners circle at the end of the 30-lap main. Point standings have Engberg in the top six, with Travis Rutz, Seth Bergman, Cory Chamberlain, Danny Kirkpatrick and Rick Fauver. They will scramble for the first three row starting positions in Saturday nights feature event during the Bob’s Burgers and Brew 360 Nationals.
At the drop of the green flag, Josh DeWitt flew to a nice advantage over the field with Willie Croft and Engberg in tow. The first caution flew on lap 2 with a few cars collected up in turn 3. On the restart DeWitt again took off this time opening a nice advantage over the field. A great battle was ensuing back in sixth and seventh place between Danielle Huson and Travis Rutz in the 9th thru 11th laps. On the thirteenth lap the yellow flag came out for Colton Heath and Cameron Smith coming off turn two. Disaster befell the leader as his header and muffler came off causing a mechanical black flag and sending him to the work area. That handed the lead to Croft.
Croft led the 14th lap before Engberg flew under Croft and took over the lead. The yellow came out again on lap 17 for Dirt Cup champion Jayme Barnes flat left rear tire. Another yellow flew on lap 19 when Jason Bloodgood went sour in turn four. Once again with Engberg comfortably out front, all eyes were on another great battle between Huson and Rutz. Danny Kirkpatrick had passed Croft for second and was comfortably in front of Huson and Rutz. As Rutz finally got past Huson for 3rd, Huson lost a motor on the front stretch bringing out the final caution at the 27th lap. On the restart it was Engberg, Kirkpatrick and Rutz where they would finish the main event.
The B Main top 5 cars making the A Main via their top 5 transfer were Barnes, Jeff Hodgson, Derek Holmwood, Seth Bergman and Mitch Olson.    The C Main transfer cars into the B Main Michael Harris, Mack Brown, Steve James, Randy Pierce, and Dan Dunlap. Heat race winners earlier in the night went to Alan Munn, Engberg, Huson, Fauver and Kirkpatrick. Setting fast time was Hodgson with a 12.222 second lap around the 3/10th mile clay oval.
Tonights show will feature a 6 car, six lap scramble race for the top three rows of the C, B and A Main events. Also the C, B and A Mains will be run. There will be exhibition races with the Deming 1200 Mini Sprints and the Ford Focus Midgets.

Ohsweken Speedway - Canadian Nationals (No points),Ohsweken, ONT
Date of Race: 9/26/2008

Race Notes:
BARNEY AND DAGGETT WIN FEATURES AT OHSWEKEN ON "NIGHT BEFORE THE NATIONALS"
Tommy Goudge, OHSWEKEN, Ont. (September 26, 2008) - With the co-operation of the weather man and a full pit area, the Night Before the Nationals presented by Village Pizza, Sit-n-Bull Construction, and Village Cafe at Ohsweken Speedway got underway on Friday night, and when all was said and done Jason Barney and Dustin Daggett had guaranteed themselves a starting spot in Saturday night's $8,000-to-win Canadian Sprint Car Nationals feature by winning twin 15 lap features. The Village Pizza Ohsweken Shootout and Dave McLeod Memorial Mr. Sprint Car Challenge were also part of the festivities on Friday night, and defending Nationals champion Steve Poirier swept those two events in dominating fashion.

The Sprint Car portion of the program began with the 4th annual Village Pizza Ohsweken Shootout, featuring the top finishers from each affiliate sanction's event at Ohsweken held in 2008, and top points finishers from the National Racing Alliance and Ohsweken's Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car division. Defending Canadian Sprint Car Nationals winner Steve Poirier drew the pole for the event, and was not seriously challenged in the 10-lap affair, taking the win in convicing fashion. Glenn Styres, Keith Dempster, Jared, Zimbardi, and Dustin Daggett rounded out the top 5. Poirier also claimed victory in the 2nd annual Dave McLeod Memorial Mr. Sprint Car Challenge, which again featured a unique tournament-style 1-on-1 match racing format. In the final round, Poirier defeated Dain Naida to claim the $1,000 prize and the title of Mr. Sprint Car for 2008.

A total of 55 sprint car drivers signed in for competition on Friday night and drew for starting positions in the 6 heat races, which were run nearly without incident until the 6th and final heat race when Rick Wilson and Jared Fink got together on the front straight, sending both flipping wildly into the entrance of turn 1. Both drivers climbed from their seriously damaged machines unhurt, but neither car will be in competition on Saturday night. Wilson however set to work preparing a backup and is expected to be in competition when Saturday night's Canadian Sprint Car Nationals get underway.

The top 5 finishers from each heat race qualified for the twin-15 lap features, with the rest of the field left to wait for Saturday night, while the top 2 finishers from each heat redrew for starting feature positions, putting Jim Price and Jared Zimbardi on the front row of the Village Cafe feature, while Dustin Daggett and Rob Ledingham assumed the top spots forthe Sit-n-Bull feature. Jason Barney quickly made his way forward in the Village Cafe feature and opened up a large lead with Kevin Job giving chase, but Poirier again made his presence known, however Barney, who has finished 2nd to Poirier in each of the last 2 Nationals features, was not to be denied in this one, and took the feature win, followed by Poirier, Job, Bobby Breen, and Brian McDonald.

Dustin Daggett and Rob Ledingham drew the lucky pills to start on the front row of the Sit-n-Bull feature, and from the drop of the green, Daggett was on a mission to be the fastest car on the track. Star driver Wayne Johnson driving the backup Styres machine started 4th and quickly made his way to 2nd, but could not make up any ground on Daggett, who drove a flawless race to come home with the feature win and a guaranteed starting spot in Saturday's A-Main along with Barney. Plenty of action kept things entertaining behind Daggett as Chuck Hebing moved into the top 5 from his starting spot outside row 4, while Bryan Howland did the same after starting 11th. Hebing would eventually catch and pass Dale Blaney for the 3rd spot, following runner-up Johnson home, while Blaney settled for 4th, matching his finish from his other Friday night appearance at Ohsweken in 2006, and Howland rounded out the top 5.
